Provenance Acquired directly from the Hancock Shakers by the notable early collector William J. Lassiter, probably in the 1950's. In 1981[?], when the prestigious Lassiter collection was auctioned at Sotheby's in New York, it was purchased by the late Milton Sherman. Hancock Shaker Village did not succeed in an attempt to acquire this object for the museum's collection, but was pleased to see it placed in the Sherman Collection, one of the most important collections of Shaker work ever amassed.
