Portrait of Eldress Sarah Ann [Jane] Collins (1855-1947), in charge of the chair industry of the South Family at Mt. Lebanon, NY, for over 60 yrs, and personally involved in seating the chai frames. She was appointed eldress when she was only 20yrs old. She is seated in a chair with a cane back and she is facing to the left. She has on a dress with a pleated skirt and the high white collar which is traditional Shaker. She has leather gloves on and is holding a purse with a handle in her right hand. She has a shoulder cape draped around her which has a tightly pleated bottom. Her hair is pulled back underneath a straw bonnet with a ruffle on the bottom. Portrait is shaded darker around the corners. It is on heavy cardboard and the back has numerous brown spots and water stains. Written in pencil in the top left hand side of the portrait is "Collins". It was removed from its mat and frame 9/1991. |
