This postcard folder contains 16 different images of the Canterbury Shaker village, plus an image on the front and an image on the back. The front of the postcard contains a general view of the village and reads "Souvenir Folder of The Shakers, East Canterbury, N.H." the back of the postcard folder has an image of maple trees lining a road. The back also contains a small flap that can be used to seal the folder. The postcards within the folder are all connected and can be fanned out like an accordian to be viewed. Each section has an image on the front and the back. The images within the folder are as follows: Front side: General View of the Village; the Old Church, built 1792; Church Lane; the Office Building; Main Dwelling, built 1793; the Chapel, Family Dining Room, the Pond. Back side: the Garage and Power House; the Pumping Station; the Laundry, Showing Old Shaker Washing Mill; General View of Village, The Shakers, East Canterbury, N.H.; the Shelter; the Family Garden; the School House, built in 1823; Maple Lane. The back flap of the folder reads: "The Canterbury Shakers, A Religious Communistic Order established in 1792 on the estate of Benjamin Whitcher, one of the first Shakers in this section, by delegates from the Parent Society at New Lebanon, New York. Cardinal Principles, Celibacy, Community of Goods, Equality of the Sexes. Object, The Greatest Good to the Greatest Number." *Please note there are two copies of this postcard, see relations* |
